Our past
Snape Institute is situated at the heart of the village, nestled on the picturesque village green. The Institute was erected in 1885 by Edith Milbank, as a heartfelt tribute to her beloved father, Mark Vane Milbank, and her grandfather, Mark Milbank, both of whom resided at Thorp Perrow.
Originally serving as a reading room and lecture hall, the main hall and kitchen were later expanded to the east in 1905, under the guidance of Sir William Grey, to accommodate a billiard room.
Over the years, the hall has undergone various renovations to ensure its modernity, while still retaining its original charm, evoking the artistic and craftmanship of its era.
Comprising a main room, kitchen, and restroom facilities, Snape Institute offers a versatile space for a multitude of purposes. The hall’s enduring features serve as a testament to its rich history, infusing the atmosphere with a sense of nostalgia and elegance.
Surrounding the building, a meticulously designed garden graces three sides of the Institute. Notably, the Memorial Garden holds a special place within this verdant oasis. Adorned with a stone, graciously donated by Sir Leonard Ropner, which once stood within the hallowed walls of the bombed Houses of Parliament, this garden serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the tumultuous period of World War II.
In conclusion, Snape Institute stands as a beacon of tradition and sophistication within the village. Its storied past, coupled with its tasteful renovations, make it a cherished venue for a wide array of events. Whether one seeks to host a lecture, a social gathering, or simply take a moment of tranquility in the beauty of the Memorial Garden, Snape Institute offers an unparalleled experience that seamlessly blends history, elegance, and modernity.

Our future
A planning application to modify the entrance lobby, enhance the rest room facilities, incorporate a storage area, and establish a small meeting room has been approved by the Committee. The application has been submitted to the District Council for planning approval, which has also been granted. The Committee is currently engaged in exploring the best way to advance this project, including fundraising efforts.
